MongoDB 3.6 comes hardened against database ransomware by default


One the biggest security news stories of 2017 was of a ransomware variant targeting improperly secured MongoDB instances. Here it is in a nutshell: some users of MongoDB accidentally left their databases exposed to the internet without any authentication. Predictably, some online ne’er-do-wells decided to take advantage of this, copying and deleting databases, before leaving a ransom note demanding a small fortune in Bitcoin for safe return of the data.
